Officials Investigate Numerous Overdoses At MCSP

Another inmate death is under investigation at Mule Creek State Prison. Officials at the Ione facility are investigating the cause of numerous suspected overdoses by inmates over the weekend.  Twelve inmates have been treated for suspected overdoses - ten were sent to outside hospitals; eight have returned to the prison and one was treated at Mule Creek medical facility.   An inmate who was discovered unresponsive in his cell Sunday, was pronounced dead later that evening. The names of the inmates involved are being withheld due to medical privacy laws.
Inmate movement is limited at the prison as the incidents are investigated.  Medical and correctional staff are conducting wellness checks throughout the facility every 30 minutes.  The Amador County District Attorney’s Office, in cooperation with the Investigative Services Unit at Mule Creek, are investigating the inmate’s death and working to identify the source of the contraband substance.
